My G-Grandfather John Charlesworth was born in 1885 in Sheffield, one of nine children born to Herbert and Maria Charlesworth. He was a Table Knife Grinder by trade. In the September qtr of 1905, he married Ellen Knott(b.1884) and they had five children, Charles, , Ellen, Edna (b.1909), Merrill (b.1911) and Irene b.1918) At the time of Johns death on 24 February 1950, the family were living at 224 Hanover Street, Sheffield. John is buried in Sheffield General Cemetery. Ellen survived her husband by fourteen years and died on 8 April 1964 at home in Gleadless. She is also buried in the General Cemetery.
Herbert Charlesworth, my G-G-Grandfather, was born in December 1852 in Sheffield, one of at least ten children born to William and Elizabeth Charlesworth. He was a Table Knife Grinder by trade. On 5 August 1873 he married neighbour Maria Merrill. Witnesses to their marriage were John Merrill and Margaret Charlesworth, who I assume to be Herbert's sister and Maria's brother. John and Margaret married each other, either later the same year or, indeed, at the same time as Herbert and Maria. (Waiting for certificate to prove the theory). Herbert and Maria had nine children, Herbert (1874), Rose (1876), Elizabeth (1878), William (1880), Ada (1882), John (1885), George (1889), Merrill (1892) and Charles (1893). Interestingly, in naming one of the boys, Maria used her family name of Merrill. Herbert died in March 1898 in Ecclesall. |
