My Great Grandmother, Clara Walker, was born in 1888 in Sheffield, the third of six children to William Henry Walker and Clara Wilson. On 23rd December 1906 she married lodger Harry Bramhall, at the parish church of St. Simon in Sheffield. Clara and Harry had at least four children; Clara (1908), Florence (1912), Jenny (1914) and Michael (dob unknown). On 13th April 1918, husband Harry was killed in action at the Battle of Messines (2nd phase of battle of Lys) in Ypres, Belgium. Widow Clara Bramhall later married Herbert Broadhurst (b.1890) and had four more children. Dorothy, Rose, Irene and Harold. Herbert died in the Sheffield Royal Hospital on 24th January 1958. When Clara died is unknown at the mo.
My G-G-Grandfather, William Henry Bennett Walker was born in 1863. The third of six children born to Joseph Walker and Elizabeth. According to the 1871 census he was born in Sheffield, but on the 1881 census his birthplace is given as Cape of Good Hope, Africa. Then again as Sheffield on the 1891 census. William's brother John is also said to have been born in Africa. Their father was a soldier posted in Africa so not really surprised. William married Clara Wilson in September 1883 in Sheffield. They had six children; Jessie (1885), Harry (1886), Clara (1888), George (1891), William (1894) and Jane (1895).
My G-G-G-Grandfather Joseph Walker was born in 1833 in Sheffield. In about 1859 he married Elizabeth (from Swinton). As shown on the 1861 census Joseph was a serving soldier, based in Aldershot. His first three children were all born while he was on active duty. They had six children; Hannah Elizabeth (b.1860 Aldershot), John (b.1862 Middle Drift, Africa), William Henry Bennett (b.1863 Cape of Good Hope, Africa), Joseph Arthur (b.1870), Emma (b.1874) and Elizabeth B (b.1880). On the 1871 census Joseph's occupation is File Cutter and their address is now 41 Duke Street, Sheffield. By 1881 they were living in nearby 4ct 2h Arundel Street. |
